While Romans once occupied this area, it was around 713 that the Moors established a fortification on top of the hill - the town's current site. It was taken from the Moors by the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1148.
A romantic castle - now a pousada, charming streets, and a delicious cherry liqueur often served in chocolate cups make this a terrific place to visit.
