As the Moorish Capital of Algarve, Silves was bigger than Lisbon from the mid-11th to mid-13th centuries, when it was sacked by King Richard and the English crusaders.

The last Moorish king, Mu'tamid, had a longtime relationship with the poet Ibn Ámmar. As an act of protest he bought then married a slave girl when his father ordered him to marry.
